Final Major Project: Why is the colours I am looking at Blue and Red?

Blue and Red

I have a true understanding of Slavery and how it was back in the days against the white and the black. I experimented and researched my ideas and developed my knowledge. back in the days around the 1619's black people did not have no clothes, they were chained, only had some clothing that would cover their private areas. They did not have the same right as the white and did not have the same wealth or the same respect. Black people was seen as nothing, they were seen as servants, cleaners and was bullied to do many duties, this made it hard for them as they were not allowed to have the right to see their families, children and do what they loved or what they wanted.
The colour blue was a very expensive pigment that only the rich could afford wore this give them stability and ownership within their society because they had money, power and was above the black people. I want to reverse the roles of how slavery was looked at within clothing by putting them in bright colour clothing such as blue to represent their hard work.
Another bright colour that was warn a lot was the colour red this was because it not only showed that they had stability but they had much more than what the black would never have. During my final major project I am going to show how the black and white should be treated as a whole and how wealth and poverty should not have anything to do with power.
My first two pieces is bright and bold, it shows how I have taken my own knowledge and transferred the bright colours such as red and blue that the black couldn't afford and make garments that slaves would of represented this would be displayed on black models to show that we are all ONE.
I started to use black bin bags for the bodice of my garment and bright red fabric for the bottom of the suit to represent the knowledge I have based on my colours that only certains could wear or afford.
My second piece is blue, bold and dusty creates texture, I used knit for embellishment and attached it on specific areas, this was because knit is a cheap material just like plastic. I therefore thought this worked well with my idea as its affordable and something you would slaves wear, I started to rip the edges of the apron to create a sense of feeling.

Furthermore I will lead my ideas to create a larger  collection of garments for my final grading of my final major project.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT: Week Three

Development ideas using Fabric Swatches to create designs via Photoshop.

Starting to look at ideas as a line up and how things would be if I decided to do it this certain way. I started to experiment with Calico by doing a template and practising my ideas to see if it would work and if it did not.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT: Week Two

During the first day of my FMP project, I tried to help myself understand what slavery means and how I can define it to myself. I was inspired by the theme slavery, looking at poverty and how the atmosphere gradually changed during a period time of their generation .Africans was taken from their homes and was not given nothing, they had to forget their past to be someone else’s slave. Slavery is brutal and horrible no matter where your from, you should never be a slave for anyone. The exhibition made me look things in a different content and realise the damage it done to individuals and how much their lives was in risk. Their was stories written in books, letters written to members of the family, weapons used to harm slaves and people who had no self concern towards others action. I am so heartbroken that Racism was such a huge topic that not much people cared towards, it was mostly towards the ‘black’ as they were not wealthy and didn't have a value like the ‘white’ people. It has brought upon action that your skin colour has to be used to describe an individual and this is what officially started racism which then leaded to Slavery.
The following was banned:
“you will not keep your children, you cannot keep your name, you will be sold, you cannot speak your own language, you will be beaten, you will not leave this place, you will not make music, you wont have no rights and you will not be free “

Blue is an expensive pigment  but was only warn by the wealthy this gives them stability and ownership within their society.
I want to reverse the roles of how slavery was looked at within clothing by putting them in bright colour clothing such as blue to represent their hard work.

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT: Week One

During the first week of Final Major Project I done some research in Regards of Slavery as thats something that I wanted to develop my knowledge within.  So I gathered as much research as I possible could that could gain me the ability to understand why slavery happened and how it made others feel when they were in the situation. This was the chance for me to experiment with my ideas and to look at different ways that I could gather information such as attending museums, talking to people who has seen slavery happen in other countries than the UK and to also get a member of the family to treat me as a slave so I can have a feel of the duties that need to be done and if not then I have to face the consequences. I made my mother make me her slave. I cleaned for her, I washed the dishes, I chopped the vegetables, was the servant for the evening, when something dropped on the floor I was the one to pick it up. I was lost and felt like I had no value or worthy this made me insecure and damaged inside. it made me want to cry and not be surrounded by anyone or breath a word to anyone as it made me physically and mentally stressed and insecure. But this is how I felt in the one day I was a slave so imagine how slaves in other countries feel and how much its worse for them then it was for me. I wrote a poem that made me vision Slavery in a better way and for me to get my message across, I recorded myself. I recorded this verbally so I can create a sense of feeling when the public listens to my tape. Through the way I talk and the way I exaggerate.

Poem: I am just a Slave

"She is hitting me, she is attacking me and she's not allowing me to be who I'm meant to be. She makes me cry and she makes me pray. I want to see my children but that is not okay. I clean for her, and I am still kind to her. I am just a slave."

3 word

Gerhard Richter, Journey and Drape

I decided to pick the word JOURNEY because there is so much I can write about and do that revolves around Journey. Journey from home to university, university to home or journey through generation, journey through life, journey through experience but I decided to look at Journey through colour, how does colour effect an individual through feelings, life, emotions or generation.
I started of by doing an interpretation of Gerhard's Richter piece by using his style to create an illusion through colour that reflects on my 3 words. I used acyrlic paint and
my design developments combined into one to create a print that I played around with on the stand and created designs out of my print.

I experimented with my print on the stand creating different styles and layouts, draping and seeing what would work and what wouldn't look good. Trying different shapes and overlaying fabric to get a sense of illusion and texture.

I used my own print to create a number of designs that represented Journey and Colour. I focused on shape and proportion showing different emotions and moods throughout my designs.

I visited The Saatchi Gallery and was inspired by Jelena Bulajic art piece, their was so much detail that looked so real and the texture that was created made me think about the journey through life and how I could use this within my design collages.

I went to a fabric company and got materials that I knew would relate well to my designs that I created on Photoshop. I thought about colour and texture as much as I thought about layout and structure. The reason why I used Jelena Bulajic work as the head on my work was because it shows you how much generation and people change and this all relates to colour therefore this relates to journey .

I decided to create a top out of calico to experiment and see if I would be happy with creating the same structure on my print fabric. Thinking about my pattern pieces, stitches that I done on my garment and structure that was created. This gave me the chance to experiment with calico to create my final calico piece.

I decided to relate my final piece to the original print I created and was inspired by Gerhard Richter style of painting, I wanted to capture the moments of journey through colour and by looking at aspects that motivated me to create designs that related to my 3 word project. I focused on colour and structure to show journey, I didn't want it to be obvious but I wanted the viewer to have a sense of a journey when they look at my final 10 line up.

Shapes (holiday project)

Holiday Project:

During the Christmas Holidays I decided to create my own holiday work, to keep myself engaged and occupied with new research and ideas. I decided to relate everything in regards to shape and form as thats something I didn't get to do during my projects on my foundation course.

I started of by doing a mood board and adding a layer of acetate on top of my research to draw on and to write quick notes on.  I started to do lots of design Developments that I connected to shapes and form and started to work around my idea.

I worked on the stand to show my development and my ideas, I used fabric to create the bodice, cut  table mats to create detail on the neck or on the bottom, I used paper to create shapes and zips to create an illusion of style. I took many pictures and worked around different developments on the stand until i got comfortable to work and express my passion and knowledge.

I started to design and create weird and odd shapes throughout my illustrations and work. I wanted to create a sense of style and attitude that has not been expressed before and also trying different colours and layouts that I thought worked.

My final piece was based around constructive and block designs, thinking about colours and what colours would suit best beside each other. I did not want to do a final line up as I thought to express my knowledge of form and shape is to bring it out on my page so you can see what my aim was.

Personality Project

Personality Project:

For the Personality Project I brought objects in that meant a lot to me such as Islamic Praying mat, Music Book, Child hood Toy, Award from High School and my mini Iron.

From these 5 objects that is very personal to me I had to cut it down to my top two and revolve my work around it, so I decided to choose my Praying mat and Music book. I started of by doing mood boards and showing why these two objects meant a lot to me, I made it personal by adding childhood photos and done quick design developments that would help others see my work the way I see it.

I started placing acetate on the top of my childhood photo and started writing why it is an important image to me and why for example the arms and the way I was placed or sat on the mat is important for a muslim girl, why my hair needs to be covered and why I need to wear baggy clothes.

I wrote quotes in Arabic that has a lot of meanings and truth towards it and why muslims believe that its important to have a clean and true heart, this is also by praying. I wanted to revolve my project around this because their is not a lot of personal beliefs shown through fashion.

I designed a collection that related to my object, praying mat and Islamically I designed covered garments to respect the religion but also show my interpertations of my personal object, I added fabric swatches and also showed my knowledge of colour and texture.

My second personal object was my Music Book this was because I have a real connection with music as this is something I engaged with from a young age.  By Playing the Violin for 7 years of my life, I learnt to accept the warmth and passion music brought for me.

I decided to make my designs more conceptual and crazy, in terms of my illustrations and designs. I connected it to my object and worked around with it in terms of colour and style. I made sure that each detail had some sort of style with it .
