Shapes (holiday project)

Holiday Project: 

During the Christmas Holidays I decided to create my own holiday work, to keep myself engaged and occupied with new research and ideas. I decided to relate everything in regards to shape and form as thats something I didn't get to do during my projects on my foundation course.

I started of by doing a mood board and adding a layer of acetate on top of my research to draw on and to write quick notes on.  I started to do lots of design Developments that I connected to shapes and form and started to work around my idea.

I worked on the stand to show my development and my ideas, I used fabric to create the bodice, cut  table mats to create detail on the neck or on the bottom, I used paper to create shapes and zips to create an illusion of style. I took many pictures and worked around different developments on the stand until i got comfortable to work and express my passion and knowledge.

I started to design and create weird and odd shapes throughout my illustrations and work. I wanted to create a sense of style and attitude that has not been expressed before and also trying different colours and layouts that I thought worked. 

My final piece was based around constructive and block designs, thinking about colours and what colours would suit best beside each other. I did not want to do a final line up as I thought to express my knowledge of form and shape is to bring it out on my page so you can see what my aim was. 

Personality Project

Personality Project:

For the Personality Project I brought objects in that meant a lot to me such as Islamic Praying mat, Music Book, Child hood Toy, Award from High School and my mini Iron.

From these 5 objects that is very personal to me I had to cut it down to my top two and revolve my work around it, so I decided to choose my Praying mat and Music book. I started of by doing mood boards and showing why these two objects meant a lot to me, I made it personal by adding childhood photos and done quick design developments that would help others see my work the way I see it.

I started placing acetate on the top of my childhood photo and started writing why it is an important image to me and why for example the arms and the way I was placed or sat on the mat is important for a muslim girl, why my hair needs to be covered and why I need to wear baggy clothes.

I wrote quotes in Arabic that has a lot of meanings and truth towards it and why muslims believe that its important to have a clean and true heart, this is also by praying. I wanted to revolve my project around this because their is not a lot of personal beliefs shown through fashion.

I designed a collection that related to my object,praying mat and Islamically I designed covered garments to respect the religion but also show my interpertations of my personal object, I added fabric swatches and also showed my knowledge of colour and texture.

My second personal object was my Music Book this was because I have a real connection with music as this is something I engaged with from a young age.  By Playing the Violin for 7 years of my life, I learnt to accept the warmth and passion music brought for me. 

I decided to make my designs more conceptual and crazy, in terms of my illustrations and designs. I connected it to my object and worked around with it in terms of colour and style. I made sure that each detail had some sort of style with it .

Politic: Race and Culture

Politic:

I decided to focus on the aspect of Race and Culture, ‘respecting other peoples skin colours and background’ I was influenced by the book that I read called “The Dress maker of Khair Khana” the quote from the book ‘That is the story I set out to tell. And those are the questions I set out to answer’ influenced me to choose countries such as Africa, Afghanistan, China and Pakistan, the reason I chose these countries was because I wanted to focus on poverty and how it can create an illusion of different races and the key fact that they are all going through poverty so thats one of the reasons why I decided to focus on race and culture.  I started of by taking pictures of different races and created a profile of different cultures for my research. I came up with quotation that influenced me such as ‘Just because im black does not mean I will hurt you’ ‘I am muslim and im not afraid to say it’ ‘Help me’ ‘Control your emotions and respect other feelings’ ‘ you and I can be a team’  these quotes inspired me to come up with a final outcome that relates to all the countries I researched about. 

I started to design waistcoats as that was something I knew connected to all the countries I researched about, therefore I continued designing and started to do quick photoshop collections made out of PVC and african pattern. I done stand work to understand shape and colour and this pushed me to create a waistcoat out of calico to demonstrate my ability of pattern cutting and idea. I decided to use brown african pattern to make one side of my waistcoat and i used light brown for the other side of the waistcoat. I used PVC to create a top panel this was because I am trying to make others aware of their actions as its important to respect other races and culture. I made this statement by printing one of my quotation and placed it on the PVC panel ‘You and I can be a team’  I created a pocket on the right hand side that is not openable but that has blue and gold round buttons to create an illusion of embroidery. 

Deconstruction and Reconstruction

Deconstruction and Reconstruction: 

During the deconstruction and reconstruction project I was inspired by two designers “Juna” and “John Galliano” I selected the best pieces of their work that inspired me to start my deconstruction project, I placed two sheets of tracing paper on the sheet and done annotation on which areas I like and  wrote a summary. I done various number of developments by scanning in old charity clothes and enlarging it to create my collages and placing it randomly in different places to get an idea of different styles, I continued doing this with different pieces of clothing until I got a large variety of designs. I got inspiration by doing stand work and working around with garments that fit best together, until I produced something I liked and could work with. I then started up doing line ups from the stand work I done on photoshop and created an illustration from them. I used a variety of clothing such as womenswear jumper from Monsoon, Baby jacket from Ted Baker and Gap baby jeans to create my deconstruction and reconstruction piece,this then helped me create my final line up. 

Lumela (Live Designer Project)

Live Project:

My industry project was based on re creating a tailored suit collection for Designer “ Lumula Nassuna“ of her Autumn/Winter collection. I had  three days to do research, design, develop and produce a back and front of the garment. I firstly looked at her website and got an idea of what sort of garments she designs and what sort of colours she uses. I then started to do research based on artists and designers that can influence me to create  work for her collection. I was inspired by Frida based on the colours she used and Coco Chanel based on the tailoring and pattern pieces of the garments, this made me excited, so I gathered all my information and created a mood board using acetate to place on top, to do annotations and designing the outline of what I was inspired by. i created A3 collages and used the same techniques with the acetate.  This then helped me to do quick trouser,blazer and shirt sketches so it increased my ability of doing quick sketches and also keeping record of my designs, I continued doing this on various pages to get a clear idea of my interoperation of Lumula Nassuna’s designs. 

I then selected a bit of everything from my design development board and created a pencil line up and chose two out of six designs that I continued working with, this helped me to do colour experimentation and therefore I completed my two final design  back to front using colours that was 

similar to Lumula Nassuna’s collection. One thing I focused on was making the stitches obvious on the garment and creating a reaction towards the garment. 

Detail

Detail Project:

When I started the Detail project I researched the military war and got inspiration and ideas based on the history and the fashion. I had to do quick detail drawings of selective areas such as collars, pockets,buttons or sleeves and expand it on trousers, dresses or tops to see how it would look if I did create the design. I done a variety of pages and got fabric samples of what colours I would use to create it. Such as light blue, black and white. I then started creating quick line ups using a HB pencil to get an idea of how it would look  and to get an idea of colour and scale. 

I done experimentations on the Stand to help me develop my ideas and focus on a specific detail area such as buttons, enlarging it on the photocopier and seeing how it would look on the manniequin as thats the nearest thing to human scale. I done many experimentations on the stand and took pictures of my development process to also see visual what looked great and what did not.

I produced six quick line up selecting an area to detail and focus on.  I created collages out of magazine cut outs and captured an area using a black pen to create the illusion of the illustration. I enlarged my detail areas on the photocopier and created large pieces on the stand to help me with my development and ideas. I then selected an illustration from my lines ups to create my final piece, I experimented by creating collages and adding  colour by using pro markers.

I done a final line up  based around pockets, buttons and collars, I added a little bit of colour to get a rough idea of how it would look if I did make this collection and how it related to my research and ideas.

I went to the Louis Vuitton Exhibition where I got to explore and see the world of fashion in a different form.

I always like taking notes on what I see and how I could use it for my own advantage.

Even if you look at a different form of Media and Fashion that may not interest you personally, their will always be something that will be eye catching that you never thought would catch your eye.

This was the most interesting part of the exhibition because I got to see a short film based on how garments was made.

Thank you to one of my best friends that I have been friends with over 10 years that came along to the exhibition as it was her first time attending one and not only supported me but also was so engaged and interested in experiencing a new field of skills and looking at the Fashion Industry in a different way.
